  • If you’re looking for assistance in managing your pension or investment  portfolio, your financial advisor might charge for his advice based on a percentage of the sum being handled. For example if you were to switch a pension fund of £50,000, your advisor might charge a fee of 3% - £1,500. The percentage is often lower for larger amounts but will usually range between 0.5% and 5%.
  • You will be given a choice to take the fee from the principle or to write a cheque to cover the fee.

  • Some services can be charged as a fixed one-time fee: usually one-off ‘transactions’ like handling a re-mortgage, or making an investment.
  • Fixed one-time fees should always be quoted by your advisor in advance of you making a purchase or commitment.
  • The initial consultation is free and without obligation.
  • The initial consultation is an opportunity that allows you to set out your goals and priorities and to get the answers to any questions you might have. It also gives your advisor the opportunity to explain how they can help, providing a detailed breakdown of any associated costs.
  • The fee will depend on exactly what you are hoping to achieve and the resources the financial advisor will need to meet your objectives combined with their experience. Costs from there on typically come in between £75 to £250 per hour depending on the level of expertise and on location and can be charged in a variety of ways.

The role of a financial advisor is now to charge a fee and in turn help you save money. In most cases, working with a good financial advisor should pay for itself several times over in the long run.

  • In some instances your financial advisor may receive a commission on products or services that they recommend to you.
  • Life insurance or protection for example still remunerate  under a commission based system.
